Hadi is a Hasara man from Afghanistan. Hasaras are a persecuted ethnic minority in Afghanistan and fearing for his life Hadi fled seeking asylum in Australia.
Despite being assessed as a geniune refugee, Hadi was detained offshore by the Australian government for 8 years on Manus Island.
8 years of detention took its toll, both physically and mentally. Hadi was attacked and hospitalized 3 times during his detention.
In 2016 Australia and the USA agreed to a refugee swap. Since then, refugees living under Australian detention on Nauru and Manus Island have been processed and are gradually entering the USA.
